Build the Base, Backfill, Drainage, and Reinforcement as One System

A retaining wall performs through its complete assembly and the soil and water around it. Foundation consistency, first-course alignment, retained-zone construction, outlets, reinforcement where required, and finish grading cannot be separated from the visible material - especially where a wide open catchment feeds water toward the face.

    We review the height retained, the slope above and below, visible soil, the direction the open site drains, nearby structures, access, and how people need to move through the finished yard.

    Excavate and Establish the Foundation

    The agreed footprint is opened for a level, compacted base. The first course sets the wall line and elevation, so inconsistencies here cannot be treated as a cosmetic issue later.

    Build the Retained Zone

    Free-draining backfill and a deliberate outlet route help keep water pressure from collecting behind the face. Geogrid or other reinforcement is incorporated where the wall system, geometry, soil, slope, and loading require it.

Patios, Walks, and Steps

A wall can create the elevation that makes a patio or outdoor room possible, but the hardscape cannot be planned separately. Patio pitch, walk width, step geometry, landings, wall caps, seating edges, and where water leaves the paved surface need one coordinated set of elevations.

Planting and Irrigation

Planting can soften a wall and make terraces useful, while roots, mature size, soil depth, and irrigation fed by the property's own supply must respect the wall and its drainage zone. Restoration follows the heavy work so new planting is not placed in the equipment path.

Fences, Utilities, and Access

Fence lines, gates, a septic field or propane run, property-specific boundaries, and future maintenance access can constrain the wall footprint. We keep those fixed elements visible before excavation, material staging, and equipment movement are finalized on an open site.

Surface Water Above and Below

The retained zone is only part of water management on acreage. Downspouts, swales, irrigation, upper-yard runoff, patio discharge, and lower-grade outlets need a practical route that does not concentrate water behind the wall or erode an exposed edge on open ground.

Construction sequence protects the finished work: underground routes and drainage decisions precede backfill; wall and step elevations precede adjoining hardscape; irrigation and planting restoration follow excavation and equipment movement.

Wall Height, Scale, and What the Address Requires

A low bed edge and a wall holding a meaningful grade near a patio or structure are different construction problems. Length, total geometry, slope above and below, soil, water, top-of-wall loads, nearby foundations, access, and what happens if the wall moves all influence the appropriate system and level of design input.

Some projects need reinforcement, engineering, permit review, utility coordination, or property-specific approval beyond a typical landscape wall. We do not promise a universal threshold or exemption. The site and proposed scope are defined first, then the permit threshold and any review are confirmed for the address before the height is fixed.

The same care applies to an existing wall. Cosmetic surface damage, isolated settlement, trapped water, loss of retained soil, a separating face, and broad movement call for different responses. Repair or replacement limits should follow the cause and the continuity of the wall system.

Water that collects in the retained soil can add pressure, move fine material, saturate the base area, or emerge where the finished landscape cannot handle it. Free-draining backfill and a planned outlet route are central wall components, and on an open lot the surface water from a wide catchment above the wall must also have a sensible path.

When is geogrid used in a retaining wall?

Geogrid reinforces the retained soil mass in some segmental wall systems. It is not a universal decorative layer. Wall geometry, height, slope, soil, loads near the top, available space, manufacturer requirements, and design input determine when and how it is incorporated.

Does every retaining wall require engineering or a permit?

No blanket answer is responsible, because height is only one factor and requirements can depend on the property, wall function, slope, surcharges, nearby structures, drainage, and jurisdiction. We define the proposed scope and confirm which engineering, review, and permit questions apply to that address before the height is fixed.

Can a retaining wall include steps, seating, or planting?

Yes, when the wall geometry and site support them. Steps need consistent rises, useful landings, drainage, and safe connections. Lower wall sections can sometimes form seating edges, and terraces can hold planting when soil depth, roots, irrigation, mature size, and wall drainage are planned together.
